5. New Cross Fire, 2021
In February 2021, the Deptford People’s Heritage Museum launched open sessions about the New Cross Fire with local people. Through oral histories and group sessions with those who live in the legacy of the tragic fire that took the lives of 14 young Black people, we explored the ongoing fight for justice for what was suspected to be a racially motivated arson attack. This ongoing process in the museum seeks to support the families of lost loved ones in their struggle to hold those responsible to account. The project received seed funding from the Goldsmiths Public Engagement fund and was developed with Dr Janna Graham and Professor Jorella Andrews with support from the Goldsmiths Public Engagement Fund.
